Internet Etiquette Garners Its Own Week

Be nice was something our moms taught us, but apparently the internet drowns her out.

It's not escaped me or most of the civilized world, but something happens to people when they read articles online. Average, reasonable people will, day in and day out, have discussions with coworkers, family members and perhaps even disagree without laying into the other person with snarky, personal attacks. Enter a comment on any webpage, however, and it's game on. (Could it be those anonymous 'handles' that cloak their identity?)

So, perhaps long overdue, Real Simple magazine has announced 'Be Nice on the Internet' Week, starting Jan. 9, in an effort to institute a return to online civility. They will take a look at the negative impact of rudeness online, provide expert tips on etiquette for the age of social media, and provide further perks on their Facebook page.

While it may seem common sense, it's more often the case that it's not so common, and we'd like to hear what you think about their day to day tips. Do you think they'll make a difference? Are you planning on 'dropping a hint' on someone by inviting them to participate?

Call it a primer for Valentines Day. Have fun, and like mom used to say, if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all.
