Muskego Assembly Rep Issues Statement on Mining Bill
Contentious debate over mining in northeastern Wisconsin pits jobs against environmental concerns, but passes on Thursday night.

A controversial bill to allow mining in northern Wisconsin created passionate debate in the State Assembly, but the bill passed in spite of arguments over the potential for environmental damage by the bill's opponents.
Representative David Craig (R-Town of Vernon) cast a yes vote for Assembly Bill 426, the ferrous metallic mining bill, and issued the following statement:
“I was proud to cast my vote last night for a bill that has the potential to bring thousands of jobs to Wisconsin,” said Rep. Craig. “I am confident the bill meets two very important objectives: maintaining sound environmental protections in our permitting process—more stringent protections than our neighboring states, in fact—while allowing our economy to move forward.”

“By streamlining the permitting process for ferrous metallic mining,” continued Rep. Craig, “AB 426 upholds Wisconsin’s history of environmental responsibility with our treasured natural resources and opens the door for more job-creating business in the state, not only for northern Wisconsin, but for southeastern Wisconsin’s mining equipment industry as well.”
