Muskego Fire Ordinance Put On Hold

New restrictions on barbecue grills has condominium residents asking for further review.

Prior to the passage of a revised fire ordinance, which requires fire pits to be placed at least 25' from structures and prohibits barbecue grills from being operated on balconies, Alderman Neil Borgman asked for the item to be deferred.

"The residents of the Bay Breeze Condominiums have requested this, as it would mean barbecue grills on their balconies wouldn't be allowed," he explained.

The Public Safety Committee had discussed the revisions throughout the fall, which stated that  "other than one and two family dwellings, no hibachi, grill, or other similar devices used for cooking, heating, or any other purpose shall be used or kindled on any balcony, under any overhanging portion, or within 10 feet of any structure."

Police officials have said that the ordinance would likely involve a neighbor complaint for them to enforce, as they realized most residents were currently out of compliance.

The revisions to the city's code were recommended as they would match the state's fire code. The matter will be reviewed again at the Public Safety Committee's next meeting in February.
