Student Charged in Lockdown at Muskego High School

Student was despondent over a breakup with his girlfriend and had taken his parents' handgun, but never entered the school building with it. However, with his whereabouts unknown, the school was locked down.

An 18-year-old Muskego High School student was charged Tuesday with possession of a firearm on school grounds and carrying a concealed weapon in connection with a March 5 incident that prompted a lockdown at the school.

According to the criminal complaint:

Muskego police were called to the boy's parents' home around 1:30 p.m. March 5, after it was discovered that there was a break-in to their gun safe, and a 9mm handgun and magazine with one bullet was missing.

The parents told police their son was depressed and despondent over a relationship with an ex-girlfriend, and that he had been sleeping a lot and skipping school recently. Muskego High School was placed on lockdown around 1:30 p.m. when it became clear that the boy was armed, but the lockdown was lifted around 2:30 p.m.

The boy was eventually located around 6 p.m. near a friend's house in Muskego.

He told police he had gone into the school to clean out his locker around 6:45 a.m. and returned home for a few hours and contemplated suicide, eventually taking the gun and magazine.

He explained he put them in the glove compartment of his car, but never loaded the gun. At one point he returned to the high school and parked, but didn't enter the school and did not handle the gun, according to the complaint.

If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of $20,000 in fines and up to four years in prison. He makes his initial court appearance on May 5.
