Third annual event brings police together with kids who need to check off their Christmas lists, but the recent tragedy made the shopping trip even more meaningful.

Police were seen all over Walmart on Saturday, but not to worry - they were there to help area kids in need buy Christmas presents for their families.

The 3rd annual 'Shop with a Cop' in Muskego saw 23 families request to have Muskego police officers help the kids pick out presents for everyone in their family. Officer Ann Shaw said this is the largest pool of applicants the department has had, but added that it was also the first year that they received donations from the community.

"Normally it's just been Walmart supplying the gift cards, but we had $350 in donations from people in the community, which really helped out," she said.

Walmart provided $100 gift cards for each child, and Muskego policemen said the event was a great balance to the news of Friday, when 20 children at Sandy Hook Elementary were killed in a mass shooting.

"It was a really tough day yesterday, so I'm really happy to be doing this today. I needed this," said officer Eric Nowicki, one of the department's school resource officers.

After the shopping trip, the kids and their police 'partners' enjoyed a lunch provided by Cousins Subs and Domino's Pizza.
