Plenty of Opportunities to Remember Memorial Day

Please give those who served their due as we head toward Memorial Day. Here are many options to give thanks and remember.

Muskego is served by two great veterans' organizations, each having a Memorial Day ceremony throughout the weekend to come, and this year there is also an opportunity to revisit history, back in the time that the holiday was first called "Decoration Day."

While the weather is looking good thus far, the weekend is far more meaningful when we can take a little time out to celebrate the true meaning of Memorial Day.

Thursday, May 24 - Civil War Artifacts Exhibition, Muskego Regency

Jim Brinks is with the Muskego VFW Post 8171 and has a wealth of history, much of it from his own family, that dates back to the Civil War. He is displaying rare memorabilia from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Teachers/parents: this is a great opportunity to 'field trip' to see history up close.

Saturday, May 26 - VFW Memorial Day Ceremony, Muskego Regency

Beginning at 10 a.m., the Veteran's of Foreign Wars Lembezeder-Cook Post 8171 will again present their ceremonies, including an MIA/POW 'table ceremony' and reflections shared by State Senator Mary Lazich and Mayor Kathy Chiaverotti. Stay afterward over refreshments to talk with the vets and their families and hear their stories as well.

Monday, May 28 - American Legion Ceremony, Muskego City Hall

The official Memorial Day on the calendar offers a second opportunity to remember the fallen. Join the Muskego American Legion Post 356 at the City Hall complex at 10 a.m. for their ceremony.

Monday, May 28 - POW/MIA National Balloon Launch in Wind Lake

Just to our south, at Veterans Memorial Park in Wind Lake (7936 S. Loomis Road) from Noon to 6pm, there will be events and entertainment with a focus on honoring those who fought for our freedom. Veterans Ceremony at 2:45pm - Live Music-Food-Beverages-Vendors - POW/MIA Hot Air Balloon launch.
