Props to Pilots: Muskego Woman Volunteers With Club Dedicated to Helping Those With Brain Disorders
The Pilot Club of Milwaukee reached out to us with a great story of volunteerism, with a local woman part of the goodwill.
We hear a lot from various organizations who would love us to tell their story of helping others. While we support everyone's efforts, we try to remain true to our hyper-local mission. The Pilot Club of Milwaukee, however, provided us with great photos, and local resident Susan Schwegel.
The organization began in 1921 in Macon, Georgia with a goal to improve the quality of life in communities throughout the world through "Friendship and Service." Milwaukee's chapter was started in 1953. The name "Pilot" was inspired by the riverboat pilots of the early 1900s who would steer a "True Course" through every condition.
The Pilot Club gives its members hands on experience making the community a better place. Members focus on helping persons affected by brain-related disorders like Autism, Alzheimer's Disease, Downs Syndrome or brain trauma. They also join with others to help kids protect their brains by performing the BrainMindersTM puppet program, which teaches brain safety.
Recently, the Pilot Club of Milwaukee and Pilot International Foundation provided a bowling ramp to North Suburban Special Olympics so physically challenged persons could enjoy the game. They also gave comfort and support in the form of 23 fleece blankets to the patients at Children's Hospital of Milwaukee's Epilepsy Monitoring Unit.
