Muskego Middle-Schooler's Report Draws Attention to Concussions

Legacy of Evan Coubal reflected in middle schooler's chosen topic for a report on concussions.

When we were kids, it was a term heard only in relation to car accidents or falls from high places, and sounded awful: concussion.

However, in meeting with the Project i class at about a month ago, and offering my continued assistance in promoting student journalism, it's obviously a term all too familiar for them.  One student, Joseph (Joe) Meyer, recently asked if I would want to post .

Knowing the condition has drawn the attention of the NFL in providing harsher fines for helmet-to-helmet contact, and keeping players off the field for longer periods of time in the aftermath of one, it's relevant. Knowing that one of our own young people, Evan Coubal, died from a concusion makes it downright vital to share on Muskego Patch.

I asked Joe why he picked the topic, and his answer was sobering: "I got hit very hard and my head bounced on the ground. I also knew Evan Coubal very well; he was one of my best friends and his concussions killed him unfortunately."

”I understand that football companies have developed “Concussion Prevention helmets” and I understand that they can’t prevent every concussion but they are definitely happening too much in my opinion." -Joe Meyer, Bay Lane Middle School

Perhaps his report would also remind his current classmates to be careful, and to recognize when it's more than just a bump on the head.

I told Joseph it's a brave paper to write and that his parents should be very proud. We should all be, and hope his words mean that another memorial won't be necessary.
