Traveling North on Highway 100? It's Shut Down After Workers Strike Gas Line

The highway is closed from Watertown Plank Road to North Avenue following incident.

If you're travel plans include 'heading up 100' to Wauwatosa, take note. Portions of northbound and southbound Mayfair Road have been shut down this morning after workers struck a gas line at 2001 N. Mayfair Rd., Wauwatosa police said.

Mayfair Road is closed from North Avenue to Watertown Plank Road. In addition, the I-45 ramp on to northbound Mayfair Road is closed, Police Lt. Jerry Witkowski said. The road is expected to remain closed at least until 11 a.m.

Construction workers struck the 4-inch gas line at 9:34 a.m.

The Fire Department believes it was a gas main, which carries a greater volume of natural gas and takes more work to shut down than a gas service line, said We Energies spokesman Barry McNulty.

The store and the nearby UFCW Local 1444 building have been evacuated, Witkowski said.

We Energies crews are on the scene and estimate that the road will be closed at least until 11 a.m. As of 10:15 a.m., workers were still trying to locate the ruptured gas line, Witkowski said.
