Vehicle Emissions Testing Will Soon be Available At Your Local Garage

Vehicle emissions centers to close on July 1st as the state ends its contract with Envirotest, and moves to decentralize locations; new partnership will provide 200 locations for testing.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is closing its vehicle emissions inspection centers as of July 1, 2012. However, this does not mean you're off the hook to take your car in to be tested.

Envirotest Wisconsin is the company that conducts vehicle inspections for the Wisconsin Department of Motor Vehicles and recently lost its state contract to provide emissions testing.

As a result, between 50 and 100 people will find themselves out of work when Envirotest Wisconsin closes and lays off its entire workforce, including those in Waukesha, Milwaukee, West Allis and Oak Creek.

The good news: it's likely a testing center will be as close as your neighborhood mechanic, quick oil change or dealership. The state's new contract will be with SysTech, which will provide testing at about 200 sites throughout the state, at a cost to the state of about $600,000 less per year.

The test is the same and will remain free for motorists. The list of area testing sites is not available yet, but will be posted soon on the SysTech website and will also be linked to on WisDOT's website.
