Weather Alert: Wind, Snow Make Travel Less Than Happy For New Years

In our corner of the state, it's wind, but elsewhere snow advisories and warnings will make travel for New Year's hazardous.

The National Weather Service has posted a High Wind Advisory to be in effect from 9 am Sunday to midnight Sunday night for Milwaukee, Waukesha, Racine, Kenosha, Walworth and Rock Counties.

Strong northwest winds will arrive early Sunday morning and continue into Sunday evening, with speeds sustained at 30 mph and gusts as high as 55 mph. The major concern is that these strong winds Sunday and Sunday night will make for difficult control of lightweight or high profile vehicles, and loose objects like those air-blown holiday decorations and trash cans are likely to be blown around.

If you're heading anywhere west or north in the state, the snow will also be heavier and will create visibility problems, especially as winds pick up on Sunday. A winter weather advisory is in effect from 8pm Saturday to 3pm Sunday for most of the counties north and west of southeastern Wisconsin, with snow totals of 2-4" expected in Fond du Lac, Washington, Dodge and Ozaukee Counties.

In addition, a Winter Storm Warning has been issued from 6pm Saturday to 6am Sunday for west central Wisconsin. While the snow is a concern, once it's fallen forecasters warn that there will be considerable blowing, drifting and white out conditions in these parts of the state as winds intensify.
