Finding Balance in Port's Business Community

A recent conversation at a meeting of the  business owners raised concerns about the direction of the business atmosphere in Port Washington.

Though one would hope the addition of a new business such as Broadway Popcorn would only spark positive thoughts about the revitilization of business in this city — there is more than one layer to the story.

There is already a popcorn store in Port Washington, business owners pointed out. A similar problem with the recent announcement that a produce tent — which will also sell bakery and meat items — will actually have negative repercussions on businesses already hoping to continue their success in this city.

The business owners struggled to understand why the city would welcome such direct competition rather than seek something completely and entirely unique to add to the city.

I'm no economist or an expert in business. I can say I was excited about some of these new businesses that have come, including the also recent opening of Twisted Willow.

However, the conversation about working together and working against the business community has continued to ring in my ears.

Do you think bringing such competitive businesses to a small town is helpful, or harmful? Is it better to allow one small business to nearly dominate a category, or is it better to offer options to a community of just more than 10,000 people?

I don't know the answer, but maybe you do?
