Interested in Having a Community Garden Plot?
Public meeting on Wednesday night will explore options to build a community garden in Port Washington.

A group of Port Washington residents have been working with area officials to develop plans for a community garden in Port Washington, and now they want the community's input.
"After several meetings with the (Parks and Recreation) Board, a citizen Organizing Committee proposes cultivating vacant city land adjacent to the Ozaukee Interurban Trail, south of Hales Trail," a press release from the organizing group said. "This approximately 1/2-acre vacant city land can support 65 individual garden plots. Suggested yearly plot fees of $25 would be collected to cover maintenance and operations."
The group is holding a public meeting from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at W.J. Niederkorn Library in the community room.

"Come learn more, indicate your interest in having a plot, or offer comments about a proposed community garden in Port Washington," the press release said.
Currently the only is behind the Feith Family YMCA in Saukville, offering about 25 plots.

"Our goal is to provide an accessible, convenient and sociable place for residents to grow fruits, vegetables, and flowers close to home and with their neighbors," the release said. "Using city land ensures that residents now and into the future have a place to grow food, while teaching and learning from others."
Suggestions from the meeting will be brought the to August 11 meeting of the Parks and Recreation Board.
