Port's More Happenin' than People Know, Apparently

Several new businesses opened their doors in Port Washington this summer, and it's time the community gets to know them.

As many of my regular readers know about Patch and me by now, I work from home — meaning I often end up instead patching away at local coffee shops and the like.

I spend a good amount of time typing away at . A lot of people come and go throughout the day, and especially during the summer.

Oftentimes, vistors come into Smith Brothers looking for food. The coffee shop offers only bagels and other pastry-type items, so baristas often muster up advice about where to go for a tasty sandwich or a good plate of pasta.

It's a heart-warming type of business-helping-business experience.

So it was disheartening to overhear the following conversation a couple weeks back.

After already discussing such options as , or water views at , the visitors asked the barista this question:

"Is there anywhere to get fish?"

"No, but there's ... " blah, blah, blah is all I heard after that.

No? My word, well, yes — there is! It's a new place, a new fish place in town, and it's got great fish and seafood! (, for the many more of you that might not know).

It's certainly not the baristas fault that she didn't know. Victor's is kind of hiding, and — as I said — relatively new.

But it's disappointing to know someone that works several days a week in downtown Port Washington knew nothing of the fish restaurant.

Second case-in-point, my boyfriend was looking to buy a contraption to hold water while out on long runs.

I suggested the bike shop in downtown Port Washington.

"There's a bike shop in downtown Port Washington?"

Ugh.

Yes.

Strike two: even the boyfriend of the editor for Patch does not know that ZuZu Pedals opened its doors this summer.

So, for those of you who might have missed out on the new things to come to town this summer, here's a recap:

  • : Offering fresh pots and cups of tea as well as a light lunch menu and Baltica-exclusive list of desserts, the tea room and gift shop is also a great place to browse neat trinkets and gift ideas. The , and the owners also it now calls home.
  • : Selling fair trade items from around the world, it's a fun place to browse and hopefully you'll walk away with something new.
  • : Offering darts, pool supplies, disc golf discs, poker cards and tables and more, Doc's Darts is a great place for anyone with this type of gaming hobby to get their supplies. Plus, the owner recently took in a kitten named Princess who lives at the store — another cute reason to stop by and say, "hi!" by Patch about the store opening.
  • : This is the fish place I was talking about, and an interesting out-of-this world selection of desserts. Seriously, check it out.
  • : The bike place I suggested to my boyfriend — though, I will be honest, I have not yet made it in there! I am trying! .
