Produce Tent Sees Sweet Response, Owner Says

Things are going "encouragingly well," at the produce tent in downtown Port Washington, according to Owner Louis Demos.

Demos operates the tent with his son, Paul, and the pair sells fresh fruits and vegetables from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week.

Demos said customers have gone crazy for the large mangoes, which sell for two dollars a piece, as well as other unique items such as pomegranate, dragon fruit and organic peaches, pears, spinach and more.

Demos is knowledgeable about the foods he sells, offering tips on the best way to eat a kumquat - rolling it in your hands first to release the smell and flavor - as well as being sure to stock ripe avocados thanks to a 72-hour baking process.

Plus, every customer leaves with a free banana, he says, tossing one in the bag.

The people in Port have proven his decision to open the shop a good one.

"This is the best community I've ever worked with (and) they seem to like our product," he said.

Demos and his son are still seeking a permanent location in Port's downtown, but the tent will operate all summer long.
