Greyhound Roundup: Swimmers Strong Second in Invite

Girls, boys basketball teams both swept in varsity games.

Here is a roundup of Shorewood High School sports courtesy of Athletic Director Bill Haury:

Boys Swimming – On Wednesday, the boys hosted a dual meet with the co-op team of Greendale/Greenfield.  The meet was highly contested throughout, with the lead never larger than 12 points and it was only that large because of the diving event (Shorewood has no diving). The meet ended in a 91-all tie.

Shorewood won five events led by Jay Tomasiewicz and his two wins in the 200 individual medley and the 100 butterfly.  Jay also swam on the first-place 200 freestyle relay team with Henry Sanders, Kirill Korolev and Philip Clausen.  Another strong win was Sanders' come-from-behind thriller in the 100 breastroke. Kirill Korolev led from start to finish in winning the 500 freestyle.  Charlie Hawks and Carlo DeSando swam lifetime bests in the 100 breastroke finishing second and third, respectively.  A key to the team scoring was that the team didn’t have any sixth-place finishes in the individual events and all three “B” relays finished third.

On Saturday, the team hosted the 10-team Shorewood Invite.  The Greyhounds took second and were within striking distance of the first-place Brookfield co-op team.  Competing against the larger Division 1 schools will give the swimmers confidence going into the remainder of the season.  The team swam better than they did the week before at Cedarburg and that shows the progress they are making.

Kirill Korolev had the best performance of the day winning the 500 freestyle and taking second in the 200 freestyle.  He also swam on the third-place 200 freestyle relay team with Jay Tomaseiwicz, Henry Sanders and Philip Clausen, and on the fourth-place 400 freestyle relay team with Jay, Philip, and Derek Lock.  Jay also took a second in the 200 individual medley and the 100 butterfly. Henry finished third in the 100 breastroke and eighth in the 200 individual medley. Derek finished fourth in the 100 backstroke and 12th in the 100 freestyle.  Devon Brusnahan finished fifth in the 100 breastroke.

Girls Basketball – The girls ran into a very strong New Berlin West team on Tuesday night and came away with a 56-20 loss.  The Vikings have a tradition of stifling defense and that’s what they did, limiting the Greyhounds to single digit scoring in each of the four quarters.

The scoring was spread around among a number of girls with freshman Grace Hayes leading the team with 5 points.  Abby Pech and Johnna Odom each scored 4 points, Ashley Eimers added 3, Robbie Holland scored 2, and Margaret O’Brien and Brianna McKinney each scored 1 point.

Friday night, the girls hosted Thomas More.  The girls played very well, but there seemed to be a lid on their rim and they could not get the ball to drop through, and even though they were taking very good shots, the rim just wasn’t bouncing their way.  The physical play and experience of Thomas More won out in a 45-38 loss for the Greyhounds.  Robbie Holland led the team with 11 points, Johnna Odom had her best night of the year with 10 points, Aisling Moloney scored 9 points, and both Grace Hayes and Margaret O’Brien scored 4 points.  The girls are now 2-7 in Woodland Conference play, and 2-9 overall

Boys Basketball – The boys team hosted New Berlin West on Tuesday night.  The night started off well with the freshman team winning to make it two in a row.  The JV battled back and forth but lost.  The varsity played another tough game, giving New Berlin West everything they had, but came up short 58-55.  They fell behind 17-10 in the first quarter but played even through the next two quarters, keeping the difference at seven points. They outplayed the Vikings in the fourth quarter, outscoring West 20-16, but were forced to foul in the final minute that led to the three-point loss.  Donovan Freeman led the team with 20 points, Aaron Bailey added 14, Bobby Kohl scored 9, Deion Jackson-Body scored 7, Kejuan Glosson scored 3, and Carmen Purvis scored 2.

Friday night, the boys traveled to Thomas More, one of the tougher teams in the Woodland Conference.  The first half was very close with Thomas More taking a two point lead after the first quarter and Shorewood cutting into that lead by one point to go into halftime just one point down, 29-28.  In the third quarter, Thomas More extended its lead to five points with a 17-13 quarter total.  Both teams stepped it up in the fourth quarter, trading baskets and going 20-20.  This left the Greyhounds on the short end of a 66-61 loss.  Sophomore Kejuan Glosson led the team with 28 points, Donovan Freeman added 15, Aaron Bailey scored 9, Bobby Kohl had 7, and Carmen Purvis scored 2 points.  The boys are now 3-6 in the Woodland Conference and 6-6 overall.
