Local Woman Nearly Victim of Scam Letter

Police say a Shorewood woman thought she was working as a "secret shopper" when she attempted to cash some fraudulent checks.

A Shorewood woman told police she thought she was working as a β€œsecret shopper” when she tried to cash a fraudulent check that was actually part of a popular scam Monday.

Police say she received a check by mail and was advised to cash the check, then wire the money through Western Union, keeping $300 for herself as payment.

But when she took the check to , 4015 N. Oakland Ave., the bank teller told her the check was bad.

Police say there is no way to track the fraudulent check and this is a scam they've seen a lot lately.
