Pasch Calls Walker's Budget a 'Huge Disappointment'

Governor's proposals, if passed, would decimate public education, Democratic lawmaker contends.

State Rep. Sandy Pasch described Gov. Scott Walker's budget address a β€œa huge disappointment, but not an unexpected disappointment.”

Pasch, a Democrat whose district includes Whitefish Bay, Shorewood and Fox Point, said after Tuesday's speech that Walker is "trying to balance the budget and future budgets on the backs of working families.”

She is particularly concerned about Walker's proposal to cut state aid to schools by more than $800 million over two years and offset that reduction in aid by making teachers pay more for pension and health care costs.

β€œHis plans for education are frightening,” Pasch said. β€œHe’s taking hundreds of millions of dollars away from school districts and telling us he’s guaranteeing a future for our children? By paying teachers less?

β€œWe’re going to see greatly increased class sizes, cuts in programs, and this is supposed to be good for education?

β€œHe’s paving the way for our children by taking away dollars for education but putting more into transportation? It’s decimating public education," she added.

Pasch added there were times during Walker's speech "when I was just incredulous.”
