Tweed Funk to Get Funky in Hubbard Park Today

The local group will bring their blues, soul and funk to Shorewood's venue by the river.

Bringing their unique mix of blues, soul, funk and elements of hip-hop, local group Tweed Funk will take over Hubbard Park Thursday at 6 p.m.

, Tweed Funk will continue to rock the village in , 3565 N. Morris Blvd., after playing several , including the Fourth of July events at Atwater Park and the concert series.

The group is led by its lead vocalist Joseph "Smokey" Holman, a protégé of legendary soul artist Curtis Mayfield, and guitarist JD Optekar, who has lived in Shorewood for several years.

The group recently released its sophomore album  “Love Is,” featuring musicianship and energy that the group says mimics its stage presence.

Tweed Funk won the 2012 Wisconsin Area Music Industry (WAMI) award for R&B/Soul Artist of the Year, and Holman was nominated for a 2012 WAMI for Best Male Vocalist. In 2011, the band was nominated for a WAMI for New Artist of the Year.

Additionally, the group represented the Grafton Blues Association at the 2012 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN.

The Shorewood Summer Sounds series features local bands every Wednesday until Aug. 29

Assorted food and beverages will be sold; no carry-in alcohol is allowed.
