Tree City USA is a program of the National Arbor Day Foundation. Nationally, 3,676 communities have earned this designation; Shorewood was first named a Tree City in 1996. Four standards must be met for the award:

- Maintaining a tree board or Forestry Department - DPW's Urban Forestry Group
- Having a community tree ordinance - Village Code, Article V - Trees and Shrubs
- Spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry, 2021 Village spending was over $20 per capita
- Celebrating Arbor Day - mark your calendars for Friday, April 29
The Tree City USA Growth Award is presented by the Arbor Day Foundation to participating Tree City USA communities that have demonstrated higher levels of tree care and community engagement. The Growth Award recognizes major milestones and annual activities in five different categories that combine to build sustainable community forestry programs. Shorewood received its fourth Growth Award in 2021.
