PHOTO: Sussex Designs New Welcome Signs

The Sussex Village Board has tentatively approved the design and construction of two new welcome signs totaling close to $50,000, according to the Sussex Sun.

The signs became a topic of discussion between the board members after Quad/Graphics donated $36,000 to the cause. However, after obtaining cost estimates from local companies like Halquist Stone, village officials quickly realized they would need to find additional funding.

Approved mock-ups of the signs by Badger Lighting & Signs show them to be 12 feet wide and 7 feet tall. Each side of the three-inch thick stone slab will have additional stone columns to resemble the sign at . They will also have a removable plaque recognizing Quad/Graphics' donation. 

According to Village Administrator Jeremy Smith, the construction of the signs will be up for competitive bidding because of the total cost. Village Board members chose a more expensive stone sign over plastic or metal ones because they would be more durable and represent Sussex in a better light.

Smith added that the final signs will be approved when village trustees approve the winning bid. Village officials are planning to place the new welcome signs outside the right-of-way of Vulcan Quarry and , formerly known as .
