PHOTOS: Tennis Courts Getting a Makeover
Sussex is spending more than $8,000 to completely resurface the tennis courts at Melinda Weaver Park. The project is expected to be completed this week.
Sussex tennis players rejoice, as the tennis courts are getting a complete makeover.
Construction crews from Poblocki Paving Corp. began stripping and resurfacing the two courts on Tuesday, a process that will cost the village nearly $8,400. Members on the Parks and Recreation Board approved the repaving project back in April.
"We had noticed last year that the courts were really starting to show wear and tear," said . "There were large cracks and the surface was falling apart. We had three quotes for the project come in, and Poblocki's was much lower than what we initally budgeted for, so we were thrilled."

The 2012 village budget set aside $16,500 for the improvements at Melinda Weaver Park, meaning the Parks and Recreation department has excess money for additional projects. After approving the quote for paving, board members suggested using the savings for their clean parks initiative.
"What's really nice is all the money that we're saving," Flaherty said. "We've been getting new recycling and trash receptacles for parks like , and since next year, we can use this money for reycling there, too."

Paving crews at will use two coats of resurfacer and two coats of color, and Flaherty says if the weather stays nice, they'll be finished by the end of this week.
The resurfacing should last at least five years.
