Driver Hit Ambulance As He Fled I-94 Traffic Stop, Sheriff Says

Sheriff's officials in Waukesha County say a 20-year-old tried driving away from a traffic stop only to hit an ambulance and a fence.

WAUKESHA COUNTY, WI — Sheriff's officials in Waukesha County say a 20-year-old man crashed into an ambulance and injured four passengers in his own car after he tried speeding away from a traffic stop on I-94 Wednesday morning. Authorities say the crash partially shut down I-94 for about an hour.

Just after 11 a.m. Wednesday, a Waukesha County Sheriff's deputy tried to pull over the driver of a vehicle, only to have the driver initially pull over, then speed away, sheriff's officials said.

According to the sheriff's office, the driver headed east on I-94 just east of Meadwobrook Road. Deputies reported chasing the vehicle east, only to watch it hit the rear of a City of Pewaukee Fire Department ambulance. Authorities said the ambulance was staffed by two fire department personnel, and had no patients on board.

Authorities said the suspect's vehicle also ran into a chain-link fence on the south side of I-94. Deputies said the driver got out of the car. Deputies chased the driver and managed to arrest him after a short chase.

According to sheriff's officials, the driver, a 20-year-old man was arrested. A 19 year-old woman who was a passenger was transported to a local hospital for injuries sustained in the crash. Sheriff's officials said the other two passengers, a 19 year-old woman and a 19 year-old man were taken into custody and later released.
