WAUKESHA, WI — As we leave Christmas 2022 behind and prepare to enter 2023, streets across Waukesha are sure to be adorned by the evergreen trees of a bygone holiday season.

The city's public works will begin picking the Christmas trees up from the curbs in January, according to the city's website. Crews will pick them up as they see them and there isn't a set route. New this year, though, residents can alert the city when their tree is ready for pickup.

The online Christmas tree pick-up courtesy alert form can help the city more efficiently collect trees. At times, other projects like plowing may take priority, the city's website said.

Here are a couple of rules from the city for the tree pick-up:

  • Residents may set out real Christmas trees only - absolutely no wreaths or artificial trees. Wreaths and artificial trees may be put in with the regular trash for garbage collection.
  • Trees must be free of lighting, decorations, tree stands or any other objects.
  • Trees should not be in bags, twine or netting.

Waukesha residents can also dispose of their Christmas tree for free in January at the city drop-off center at 750 Sentry Drive. The drop-off center is open 8 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturdays.
