WAUKESHA, WI — Waukesha County residents returned 6,054 pounds of over-the-counter medication as part of National Drug Take-Back Day, Waukesha County Sheriff Eric Severson announced Tuesday.

Wisconsin raked in 59,840 pounds of unwanted prescription pills, patches, and vials on April 30, Attorney General Josh Kaul said in a statement. Residents returned nearly a tenth of the total number of returned drugs in 18 municipalities within Waukesha County, sheriff's office data showed.

"Drug take back events provide a safe and convenient method for our communities to dispose of unwanted and/or unused medication," Severson said. "They also serve as a mechanism to educate the community about the potential abuse and consequences of improper storage and disposal of prescription medications."
