MENOMONEE FALLS, WI — Republican State Rep. Janel Brandtjen, who was barred from her party's caucus, announced a bid for the state senate seat left by Alberta Darling's departure, according to multiple media reports.

Brandtjen announced the run for the 8th District seat on Monday, bringing the need for a Republican primary in February, The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel noted in a report. Dan Knodl, a Republican State Rep. for the 24th District, is also running for the senate seat.

Gov. Tony Evers called for a special election to fill the seat to take place alongside the spring election for Wisconsin Supreme Court. The 8th District covers parts of Milwaukee, Washington, Waukesha and Ozaukee counties.

Brandtjen was kicked out of the Republican caucus after colleagues said they lost trust in her over election conspiracy theories, according to a report by The Associated Press. Brandtjen gained media coverage in November after she said several military ballots were mailed to her Waukesha County residence.
