WAUKESHA, WI — The Waukesha County Sheriff's Office is reminding residents that they will not call you to request money after recent reports of scam calls where someone posed as a sheriff's representative.

Calls of the sort have been reported in Waukesha County and surrounding counties, officials said in a news release on Sunday. The scammer, posing as a sheriff representative, claims there are outstanding warrants and citations or missed court appearances, the news release said.

But the real Waukesha County Sheriff's Office said they would never contact citizens over the phone to ask for money or advise them on warrants, citations or missed court appearances.

Additionally, the sheriff's office said it would never request payments through pre-paid money cards or gift cards.

"A tactic that has been used is they will ask you to drive to the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department as they are on the phone," the news release said. "While driving they ask where you are to determine what stores are nearby. They have then requested the victims to stop and purchase pre-paid money where they request the card information."
