WAUKESHA, WI — Waukesha residents who refuse to miss one of the city's many parades can expect to see new routes this year as the city reviews safety procedures for 2023.

Every parade this year will be on a new route, the city announced in a news release. The new route was chosen for a variety of reasons including for placement of mobile vehicle barriers, access for emergency services, closer and additional parking, plus improved traffic flow, the release said.

In addition to the route changes, the city announced that Independence Day fireworks will now take place on July 3 at 9:30 p.m. at Lowell Park. The Independence Day parade will still be held on July 4 at 11 a.m. The city said the change in fireworks timing will in part help the efficiency of city services.

“I appreciate the continued efforts of our entire Waukesha team as we work to make improvements to our events in 2023,” said Mayor Shawn Reilly in the news release. “I look forward to seeing our community come together throughout the year.”

With the new parade route, the city also plans on establishing a "secure perimeter" for each parade with parking restrictions.

The changes come after the city's Christmas parade in 2021, where prosecutors said a man drove his SUV through the crowd, killing six and injuring many more. The man was sentenced to life in prison last year.
