Waukesha Police Chief Apologizes After Gun Found In Airport Carry-On
Waukesha Police Chief Daniel Thompson on Tuesday apologized after he said he mistakenly brought a gun to an airport.

WAUKESHA, WI — Waukesha Police Chief Daniel P. Thompson on Tuesday issued a statement apologizing after a firearm was discovered in his bag at an airport.
Thompson said he was traveling in an official capacity to a conference to share Waukesha's experiences at the Nov. 2021 Christmas parade. Before he left, he was working and did not check his carry-on bag that had his firearm in it, he said.
The gun was found at Milwaukee's Mitchell International Airport just before noon on Tuesday at the Concourse C security screen, according to a report by TMJ4. Thompson was given a $767 fine, the report said.
Thompson said he explained to authorities his lapse in judgment when it came to double checking his bags that he usually carries for work.

"While I was being screened by the Transportation Safety Administration, I was advised they located a restricted item," Thompson wrote. "I am grateful for the technologies in place that keep air travel safe. I was escorted to a room where I was interviewed and cooperated with their internal review of the incident."
"I am embarrassed in this situation and hold myself ultimately responsible," wrote Thompson. "I believe in accountability and will be held accountable for the situation. I also understand that I am human and make mistakes. I am sorry for the negative attention this brought not only to me but for the amazing community that I serve at the City of Waukesha Police Department."
