Show and Yell: Dog Bites School Custodian

A woman who was unsure how her dog would react in a classroom crowded with children brought the animal to school anyway – but it was a staff member who found out the answer.

At 10:15 a.m. Wednesday, a custodian at Longfellow Middle School was bitten on the hand and injured by a dog brought to school for a student’s class presentation.

The student’s grandmother had brought the dog, a golden retriever-Lab mix, to the school and had stepped out of her granddaughter’s classroom to take a phone call, with the pet on a "soft lead," or leash.

The custodian noticed the dog in the sixth/seventh-grade hallway, walked over and remarked, “What a nice dog. The owner replied, “Yes, I wasn’t sure how he would behave around kids.”

The custodian put out her hand to let the dog sniff her – whereupon the animal lunged at her and bit her hand, causing a ¾-inch laceration to a finger.

The dog was one of several allowed in the classroom that morning for student presentations.

The custodian was treated at Aurora Urgent Care, 3289 N. Mayfair Rd., and released.

Longfellow Principal Jason Galien was asked to prepare a report on the incident.

Police ordered the dog's owner to provide proof of current vaccinations and imposed a 10-day quarantine.
