Despite Persistent Chill, Spring Touches Wauwatosa

Rushing streams, bursting buds and outdoor activity say the long wait is near an end.

The calendar says it's been spring for more than a week now, but the stubborn thermometer seems to disagree.

Wauwatosa has been assailed for a week now with rain, freezing rain, snow flurries and unseasonable cold, yet there are ample signs that winter really is in retreat.

We got out our camera on the last pleasant day before what we hope will prove to have been the final round of raw weather, and everywhere we turned the lens we found undeniable evidence that Tosa has had enough of staying indoors, and that nature is preparing a riot of color for our viewing pleasure the minute the mercury decides to hold steady above freezing.

April may prove us all fools, but we swear that we even detected a change in strangers' faces. Gone with the snowshovel is the quick grimace; here, perhaps to stay, is that relaxed grin that says, "Hey, we made it through another one."
