WHITEFISH BAY, WI — A Democrat on Wednesday entered the race to fill the Wisconsin Senate seat that was left open by the retirement of longtime Republican politician Alberta Darling.

Jodi Habush Sinykin of Whitefish Bay announced her bid for the 8th District saying she intends to become the first Democrat in the seat since 1992. At least two Republicans already announced runs for the district, which covers swaths of Milwaukee's northern and northwestern suburbs.

“As someone who has lived and worked in the District for most of my life, I am committed to creating opportunities that foster a strong sense of community and that ensure open dialogue between residents and myself," said Habush Sinykin in a news release. "I will be a Senator who listens and learns from the constituents in the 8th District, working to address the cost of healthcare, a woman’s right to make her own health and reproductive decisions, maintaining safe communities, ensuring a good education for our children, and finding ways to ensure that area businesses and jobs can both survive and thrive in these difficult economic times.”

When Gov. Tony Evers, a Democrat, announced the special election for Darling's seat, he commended the longtime Republican's 32-year political career.

"Senator Darling has earned the respect of colleagues on both sides of the aisle because she’s a diligent leader who’s always carried herself with poise, class, and grace," said Evers in a release.

Habush Sinykin's immediate background includes practicing as an attorney in environmental law and policy, according to a news release from her campaign. Her campaign confirmed she is the first Democrat to enter the race.
