Threats Captures State Championship in 200 Meters

Also in WIAA state competitions, Ben Foran made a strong showing in the tennis singles bracket. Now the girls soccer team carries the flag, facing No. 1-ranked Cedarburg on Thursday in the sectional.

Senior Brandon Threats brought home the WIAA state title in the boys 200 meters over the weekend at the state track and field championships in LaCrosse.

Threats posted the fastest time in the preliminaries and then took the championship in 22.10 seconds. He also helped the 4 x 200 relay team to the second-best qualifying time in preliminaries, but did not run the final and the Blue Dukes finished sixth. Runners were Tommy Friesch, James Stecker, Darrein Walker and Rashadeem Gray.

Nate Gomoll finished eighth in the 1,600, earning a point for the Blue Dukes, who tied for 19th with 14 points.

Senior Ben Foran made an impressive run through the Division 1 singles bracket. He opened by beating Myles Iwen of DePere 6-1, 6-0. He then upset a seeded player, Christian Phelps of Eau Claire Memorial, 6-4, 6-0.

That put him into the round of 16 against the defending champion, Damon Niquet of Marquette High School. Foran proceeded to snatch the first set from Niquet in a tiebreaker, 7-6. Niquet then ended Foran’s season by taking the next two sets, 6-2, 6-2. He went on to win the state title again.

Also from Whitefish Bay, Wentong Zhang lost his first match to Jake Diesler of Mukwonago, 6-2, 6-3.

In doubles, Matt Kavanaugh and Graham Martens tore through their first two matches at state, losing only three games. Then they ran into the top seed, Ben Klein and Ben Stewart of Brookfield East. The Brookfield East duo triumphed, 6-3, 7-5.

The Blue Dukes’ other team, Andy Krugler and Charlie Bostwick, won their first match with tiebreaker victory after splitting the first two sets. They lost in the second round to Will Kivlin and Corey Bett of Greendale, 7-5, 4-6, 6-1.
