Tips to Staying Safe in the Summer Heat

The North Shore Health Department offers a couple tips to prevent heat exhausion and heat stroke in warm weather.

Now that it is finally time to spend some time outside, the North Shore Health Department would like to remind everyone to put your health first when enjoying the great weather.

Remember to check on your vulnerable neighbors who may not be able to get to a cool place quickly.

1) Wear a wide brimmed hat when outside to keep your head and face cool. This will also provide protection from damaging sun exposure.

2) Wear a long sleeved shirt outside. It should be light colored and loose fitting except when working around machinery. This will also protect you from insect bites.

3) Keep water with you. Take drinks frequently to stay hydrated.

4) Take frequent breaks in the shade or in a cool environment during the hottest times of the day.

5) Adjust gradually to working in the heat over a period of 10 to 20 days.

6) Wear sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. Make sure children are also adequately protected.

7) Have a plan to get to a cool place if you do not have air conditioning in your home. Ideas are a family member’s home, shopping malls, movie theaters, libraries and community centers.

8) Remember that a fan may improve comfort, but does not reduce the temperature in a home.

9) Know if you are at risk for heat-related illnesses due to cardiac disease, certain medications or other chronic medical issues.

Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are serious conditions and anyone showing signs of heat related illness should be moved to a cool area, offered sips of water if conscious and provided with attention from emergency medical personnel as soon as possible.
