Update: Hospital Capacity In Whitefish Bay Area

WHITEFISH BAY, WI — A fourth surge of coronavirus infections has already begun to overwhelm hospitals in parts of the country. Areas with lower vaccination rates are suffering worse.

Nationally, the seven-day average of new cases, which had fallen steadily from its peak of nearly 250,000 in January, is rising again, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. Over the week ending Aug. 3, new cases averaged more than 89,000, a level not seen since February.

An average of about 43,000 people across the country were hospitalized with COVID-19 between July 27 and Aug. 2, according to the CDC. That's the highest seven-day average since early March 2021, though still below the January peak of nearly 137,000 patients.

State health officials in Wisconsin reported to the federal government last week that approximately 63 percent of inpatient beds and 53 percent of ICU beds in hospitals across the state were occupied as of July 29. Around 3 percent of inpatient beds and 6 percent of ICU beds statewide were filled by COVID-19 patients, they reported.

Elsewhere in the U.S., Florida recently shattered its previous coronavirus hospitalization peak, according to the state's hospital association. There were more than 11,500 coronavirus hospitalizations as of Tuesday, which was 13 percent higher than the previous, July 2020 peak.

Current coronavirus vaccines remain extremely effective at preventing hospitalization and death from COVID-19, according to the CDC. The U.S. surpassed President Joe Biden's goal of getting 70 percent of adults vaccinated on Aug. 2, albeit about a month behind his July 4 target date.

The latest hospitalization numbers from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for Milwaukee County, included below, are current through Thursday, July 29, and represent a rolling seven-day average. Note that the figures for occupied hospital beds sometimes exceed 100 percent; this is because more than one patient sometimes occupies a bed over the course of a week.

Health experts have said that the share of a hospital's total beds devoted to coronavirus cases is key to understanding the strain on its resources. A share greater than 10 percent is said to be a cause of concern. When that share exceeds 20 percent, a hospital is said to be under extreme stress; and as the share approaches 50 percent, the stress is said to be immense.
