Listeria Concerns Spark Jerky Recall In Alabama: USDA
More than 1,600 pounds of ready-to-eat jerky products have been recalled in eight states, including Alabama.
ALABAMA — More than 1,600 pounds of ready-to-eat jerky products across Alabama and seven other states have been recalled because of Listeria concerns, the Department of Agriculture announced last week.
The products from California-based Boyd Specialties LLC were recalled in Alabama, California, Connecticut, Michigan, New Jersey, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Texas.
Boyd Specialties recalled the jerky products after the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service discovered the threat when routine product testing revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes, the bacteria that causes listeriosis.

The recalled jerky products were produced on Feb. 23 and have the designation "EST. 40269" inside the USDA mark of inspection, according to the recall notice.
Listeriosis primarily affects older adults, people with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women and their newborns but also can cause negative reactions in people outside these at-risk groups. The infection can cause fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms.
