LIVE UPDATES: Severe Storms Move Over Alabama Tuesday

BIRMINGHAM, AL — Forecasters with the National Weather Service office in Birmingham are urging Alabama residents to stay weather-aware beginning Tuesday afternoon, as a line of severe storms could impact a large part of the state.

West Alabama, including Tuscaloosa, can expect the line of storms to move into the area around 2 p.m., according to the latest models from the NWS, while central Alabama and the Birmingham area will likely see any severe threats from 6 p.m. into the early morning hours.

Rainfall totals are expected to be between 2-4 inches, prompting the NWS to place much of west and central Alabama under a Flood Watch.

Sustained winds are expected to be between 10-20 mph, with gusts up to 40 mph possible.

7:40 p.m.

  • ALDOT reports flooding on U.S. Highway 11 at County Road 208 in Eutaw.
  • The NOAA Storm Prediction Center reports damage to multiple structures in Hale County near the intersection of County 52 and Highway 69 South.
  • Tuscaloosa County Public Works reports flooding at Old Fayette Road at Traweek Road and Brady Montgomery Road. The flood-prone road has been closed until further notice.

7:20 p.m.

  • A Flash Flood Warning has been issued for Tuscaloosa County until 9:15 p.m. Tuesday
  • Reports are coming in concerning potential damage near Brookwood and in the area of Highway 69 South near Moundville.
  • The Alabama Department of Transportation reports flooding at McFarland Boulevard and University Boulevard. The road has been closed and motorists are asked to seek alternative routes.
  • Flooding has been reported on Alabama Highway 171 at Woodway Drive in Echola.

7:10 p.m.

  • A Tornado Warning has been issued for the northeastern portion of Tuscaloosa County until 7:45 p.m., primarily for the area of Brookwood and Peterson.
  • This warning does not include the cities of Northport or Tuscaloosa, nor the University of Alabama campus.

7 p.m.

  • A Tornado Watch for Tuscaloosa County and a large swath of west Alabama has been extended until 11 p.m.
  • The Tornado Watch also applies to the following counties: Greene, Hale, Marengo, Sumter and Walker.

6:50 p.m.

  • A Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for Tuscaloosa County and a large part of west central Alabama until 7:30 p.m. The warned storm is currently in the area of Shelton State Community College, moving northeast.
  • The NWS says this storm could pack winds up to 60 mph, potentially causing damage to roofs, siding and trees.
  • The Tornado Watch is still in place for Tuscaloosa County and most of west Alabama until 7 p.m.
  • As of the publication of this update, Alabama Power reported 1,602 customers are currently without power in Tuscaloosa County.
  • In total, the utility reports 2,951 customers affected statewide.

6:40 p.m.

  • The National Weather Service has pointed out that, due to the relatively slow movement of the line of storms, flooding could become more of an issue for many across the state.
  • Flood Advisories have been issued for areas from Sumter County, up through Fayette and Walker counties.
  • In its latest updated graphic (pictured below) the Birmingham metro can expect impacts through 9 p.m. Tuesday night.
  • According to the NOAA Storm Prediction Center, multiple trees have fallen in Colbert County near Highway 20 and Highway 157 near the Spring Valley area.
  • Tree damage has been reported in Limestone County in the area of Little Elk Road and Snake Road.

4:15 p.m.

  • The National Weather Service has extended its Tornado Watch to the middle third of the state, including Jefferson County, until 11 p.m. The initial Tornado Watch for the western part of the state will remain in place until 7 p.m.
  • Alabama's first Tornado Warning of the day has been issued for Sumter County until 5:15 p.m. As of the publication of this update, the storm was near Lauderdale, moving northeast toward Emelle.

4 p.m.

  • In Tuscaloosa County, the Montgomery Volunteer Fire Department reported a tree down on Highway 171 near the 9 mile marker. The southbound lane was blocked, but has since been cleared and open to traffic.
  • A Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for Pickens, Lamar and western Marion counties until 4:30 p.m.
  • There are no active Tornado Warnings in Alabama at this time.
