BIRMINGHAM, AL — If you’re among the millions of Americans traveling this Thanksgiving, you may be in for some sticker shock at the gas pump.
Gas prices are at a seven-year high heading into the holiday weekend, according to a recent AAA report. As of Nov. 19, the average price for a gallon of gas in the United States was $3.41.
Last year, gas prices hovered around $2.12 per gallon just before the Thanksgiving holiday.

How much can you expect to pay at the pump in Alabama? AAA data shows the average price for a gallon of gas in Alabama was $3.17 on Friday. Average prices are updated daily.
Alabama counties with the highest average gas prices as of Friday:

- Macon County: $3.43 per gallon
- Perry County: $3.39 per gallon
- Butler County: $3.34 per gallon
- Lowndes County: $3.30 per gallon
- Barbour County: $3.29 per gallon
- Bullock County: $3.29 per gallon
- Choctaw County: $3.29 per gallon
- Greene County: $3.29 per gallon
- Wilcox County: $3.29 per gallon
The Alabama counties with the lowest average gas prices as of Friday:
- Clay County: $3.09 per gallon
- Etowah County: $3.09 per gallon
- Marshall County: $3.09 per gallon
- Shelby County: $3.11 per gallon
- Chilton County: $3.18 per gallon
- Fayette County: $3.18 per gallon
- Hale County: $3.18 per gallon
- Jackson County: $3.18 per gallon
- Mobile County: $3.18 per gallon
- Dale County: $3.19 per gallon
If you live in the western United States, you’re likely paying some of the highest gas prices in the nation. As of Nov. 17, gas prices were as much as $4.69 in California, $3.98 in Nevada, $3.87 in Washington state and $3.78 in Oregon.
Meanwhile, Southern states including Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Missouri and Kentucky are enjoying the nation’s lowest gas prices, ranging from $2.99 to $3.18 per gallon.
Destinations vary this Thanksgiving, but AAA says the top five destinations this year are Orlando, Anaheim, Dallas, Phoenix and Hawaii.
