6 Killed In String Of Birmingham Weekend Homicides: Police

Chief Patrick Smith is offering "prayers and condolences" as his department investigates four Saturday homicides and two Sunday homicides.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — After his department investigated four homicides on Saturday, Birmingham Police Chief Patrick D. Smith offered condolences to the affected families — then, two more people died in homicides on Sunday.

"Today, the Birmingham Police Department investigated four separate homicides in our city," Smith said in a statement on Saturday. "Our prayers and condolences go out to each family, who has been impacted by this useless and unnecessary violence. We will continue to investigate to seek justice for each victim and their family members."

Some of the victims have been identified, while others will be after next of kin is notified, police said.

The first shooting was Birmingham's 101st murder investigation of 2021, while the final one marks the city's 106th murder investigation. Here is information on each of the shootings, provided by the Birmingham Police Department:

No. 1: Old Kirby Middle School

At around 7 a.m. Saturday, officers arrived at 1328 28th Street North (location of Old Kirby Middle School) on a report of a person down.

Police found a male lying unresponsive in a parking lot suffering from an apparent gunshot wound, and Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel pronounced him deceased at the scene.

An initial investigation suggests that he may have been shot at some point between the previous night and the early morning. No one is in custody at this time.

No. 2: 3500 block of 17th Avenue North

At around 7:55 a.m. Saturday, officers arrived at a residence on report of a person shot. Officers found two males inside the residence suffering from "apparent gunshot wounds."

Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel pronounced one of the men deceased at the scene, and transported the second to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Preliminary investigation suggests multiple people were in the house prior to shots being fired inside it, and officers have detained the multiple occupants for questioning.

Police will provide subsequent updates after detectives interview the occupants.

No. 3: 87th Street North at 7th Avenue North

At around 2:45 p.m. Saturday, officers were dispatched to the intersection on report of a traffic accident, but when they arrived they found a man inside a white sedan unresponsive and suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue pronounced the victim deceased at the scene. No one is in custody at this time and details are limited in the investigation.

No. 4: 1000 block of Elm Street Southwest

At around 8:25 p.m. Saturday, officers responded to the 1000 block of Elm Street Southwest for a report of a person shot, and they found a responsive man lying in a grassy field suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

Though several community members and responding officers aided the victim, he died at UAB Hospital after Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel transported him there, police said.

An initial investigation found that the man may have been shot in the 1000 block of 17th Street Southwest after a confrontation ensued between him and a separate party, police said, though currently no one is in custody.

No. 5: Adona Apartment Complex

At around 3 p.m. Sunday, police responded to a report of a person with a gun in the parking lot of Adona Apartment Complex (900 block of Aspen Drive).

While officers were en route, the call was upgraded to a person shot at the location, and when they arrived the officers found a victim — identified as Daontay Dawon Jarrett, 30, of Birmingham — lying unresponsive on a staircase.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue pronounced Jarrett deceased on the scene, and a preliminary investigation suggests he was walking in the parking lot when an unknown suspect fired shots at him.

Currently, no one is in custody.

No. 6: 400 block of Fulton Avenue Southwest

At around 10:20 p.m. Sunday, police responded to the 400 block of Fulton Avenue Southwest on a report of a person shot.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel pronounced the man deceased after officers found him "lying unresponsive in the roadway suffering from an apparent gunshot wound," police said.

A preliminary investigation suggests the man was shot in the road, and police said a suspect was seen fleeing the area into a nearby residence.

WBRC reported that the Jefferson County Coroner's Office has identified the victim as David Desmond, 17.

Two people of interest were taken into custody without incident after officers surrounded a residence in the 400 block of Fulton Street Southwest. Police said both will be questioned by Birmingham Police Department Homicide Division detectives, and more information will be shared as it becomes available.
