Here are the top three stories today in Birmingham:
- Birmingham city leaders are exploring options to assist the local homeless population. Councilman Hunter Williams said that emergency shelters don't address the root causes of homelessness, which can often include addiction or mental illness. The city is considering a pallet shelter program and nonprofit organizations are being chosen to provide wrap-around services. Williams is hopeful that these measures could significantly decrease the number of homeless individuals in Birmingham. (CBS 42)
- Leaders from the City of Birmingham and District 3 met with residents recently to provide an update on drainage in the Caldwell Park area. Caldwell Park is home to historic buildings, including the Virginia Samford Theatre, which has been threatened by increased levels of flooding in recent years. A drainage study that began in 2022 is now complete, and the project has moved to the design phase. The city has contracted with Scholl Engineering to design a flood mitigation project, and that design should be completed late this year. Construction is set to begin in 2024, and there is not yet an estimated date for when the project will be completed. (ABC 3340)
- June was designed as "Black Music Month" by Jimmy Carter in 1979, and the Birmingham Times shared a list of upcoming performances and musical releases to celebrate the impact that Black musicians have had on American music. Birmingham native and rapper Big Yavo will debut new music on Jun. 23, and Encore Theatre and Gallery is hosting weekly performances with themes such as R&B Week and Soul & Rock Week.
