FedEx Driver Detained In Fatal I-59 Crash: Report

A road worker was killed after being hit by a FedEx truck on I-59/20 Thursday, according to a news report.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — A FedEx driver has been detained by police after a road worker on I-59 was struck and killed near the Roebuck Parkway exit. The incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. Thursday.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel pronounced the man dead on the scene. While on the scene, officers learned that the vehicle that hit the male left the scene. Witnesses identified the vehicle as a “white Fed Ex van.”

Just before 1 p.m., officers spotted the van in the 200 block of Gadsden Highway, according to Officer Truman Fitzgerald of the Birmingham Police Department. Officers executed a traffic stop on the vehicle and took the driver into custody.

Fitzgerald said the driver was subsequently transported to a local hospital for a medical evaluation.
