Man Accused Of Assaulting Mother Has Standoff With Police

An Irondale man accused of assaulting his 77-year-old mother held police at bay for nearly five hours before surrendering.

IRONDALE, AL — For nearly five hour, Irondale police were involved in a standoff with a man accused of assaulting his 77-year-old mother. The ordeal began around 11 p.m. Tuesday in the 5500 block of Hunters Hill Road, according to AL.com.

Sgt. Michael Mangina of the Irondale Police Department said the woman who had reportedly been assaulted escaped and told officers her son was inside the and threatening to take his own life.

Mangina said the 46-year-old man had a history of mental illness and had been arrested before when he fired a gun inside a Trussville restaurant in June.

Police were able to take the man into custody around 4 a.m. Wednesday.
