Here are the top three stories in and around Birmingham today:
- At 4:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Jun. 13, three young teenagers were victims of a shooting in the 1400 block of 19th Place S.W. According to local officials, all three victims were taken to the hospital and remained stable during that time. The suspect or suspects are currently still unknown, as well as what the motive could have been. The police have not yet ruled out the possibility that the victims knew the suspects. (AL.com)
- Birmingham roads are still having issues dealing with exhibition driving, with new footage that was filmed on I-20/59 revealing a reckless driver doing doughnuts and holding up traffic. Because police were not present during this incident, which occurred above Birmingham’s City Walk, there is not much that they can do; however, a new law will be put into place in two months where police officials can have a little more power when it comes to these situations. This new Alabama law will allow police "to revoke a license for exhibition driving, seize a vehicle involved, [and] give jail time," and they can use video evidence and social media in investigations. (WBRC)
- On Monday, Jun. 12, John C. Brown took on the new position in office as the city manager down the road in Tarrant City Hall, but his position is being questioned due to him not being the mayor. The council has been skeptical of the current mayor, Wayman Newton's, ability to lead. Hence, the council hired Brown; however, Newton has filed a lawsuit stating that the council did not have the authority to do so and create this position. (AL.com)
