VP Vance says Alabama girl killed in Brown University shooting was among ‘bright young stars' (wdhn.com) — From Dothan, Alabamians are mourning after Vice President JD Vance and other leaders honored Ella Cook, a Mountain Brook native killed in a weekend shooting at Brown University. Cook, a student leader with College Republicans, was studying for an exam when gunfire erupted, killing her and another student and injuring nine others as officials and friends share condolences.

Former mayor, businessman cheers up rehab patients for Christmas (wdhn.com) — Former Dothan mayor and businessman Mike Schmitz spent Monday playing “Santa” at Encompass Health in Dothan, handing out more than 60 Christmas baskets to rehab patients. He’s been visiting the center for about a decade, focusing especially on seniors without nearby family to remind them they’re loved and not forgotten during the holidays.
