DTLR Sponsors Student Trip to Selma, Ala., Honoring Bloody Sunday

The retailer will sponsor a trip for 165 students from Atlanta to march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in commemoration of Bloody Sunday

(DTLR)

On Sunday, March 3, 2023, DTLR, a highly successful lifestyle retailer with over 250 stores in 21 states, sponsored 165 students from various Atlanta Metro-Area schools and organizations. They were provided with the opportunity to travel to Selma, Ala., and commemorate the 59th Anniversary Jubilee of the Montgomery-to-Selma March and Voting Rights Act. This marked the fourth year DTLR sponsored the field trip experience.

The students marched across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, a National Historic Landmark with a history of civil rights movement marches, carrying messages of love and joy. They were joined by thousands of activists, historians, and community members in a moving educational experience that inspired students of all ethnic backgrounds to respect and appreciate the power of their vote

Students also visited other historical sites, including the Rosa Parks monument, and the homes of prominent civil rights leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. They gained admission to the Legacy Museum — which featured first-person historical accounts, interactive content, and world-class art to illustrate the history and legacy of slavery in America.

This event was a continuation of DTLR’s nationwide “Mission 1865” campaign, named after the year that the 13th Amendment was passed and ratified by Congress to abolish slavery. It provided opportunities and experiences for communities to learn about and celebrate African-American history and culture.

DTLR takes pride in its role in fashion, music and culture, and gives back to the communities it serves through several other programs, including toy drives and partnerships with athletes and recording artists to support local schools and communities.
