Here are the top three stories today in Montgomery:
- On Thursday, Apr. 27, every member of the Alabama Senate backed legislation that would cut state sales tax groceries in half. The bill was introduced by Republican Senator Andrew Jones and states that sales tax on food will gradually reduce from 4 percent to 2 percent, provided there is enough state revenue to balance the loss to the education budget. All 35 senators have signed on as sponsors, which overall improves the legislation's chances of winning approval after similar bills have been stalled in Montgomery for years prior. (The Cullman Times)
- Alabama's running back, Jahmyr Gibbs, was selected by the Detroit Lions during the first round of Thursday night's 2023 NFL Draft. Sources report that Gibbs was viewed as a second-round prospect, but ended up being drafted as the 12th overall pick for the Lions. He was the second running back taken off the board. (247sports.com)
- According to the National Weather Service, severe weather is headed to Alabama this upcoming weekend. On Saturday, Apr. 29, NOAA's Storm Prediction Center has a Level 1 out of 5 risk in place for any storms throughout the area, but anyone located south of Montgomery will need to watch out for stronger winds. These storms have the possibility of bringing in a variety of damaging wind gusts, hail, heavy rain, and tornadoes. (AL.com)
