March is Women's History Month! The theme for 2022 is "Women Providing Healing, Promoting Hope." This theme is dedicated to the caregivers and frontline workers in this ongoing pandemic and "the thousands of ways that women of all cultures have provided both healing and hope throughout history."  Celebrate with the Birmingham Public Library (BPL) this month with these unique events highlighting women's history.  Avondale Regional Branch Library 509 40th St S, Birmingham, AL 35222 BPL Spinners Club Wednesday, March 30 | Starts at 2:00 p.m. Russell Lee from Five Points West Library will present a music appreciation program, looking at definitive female vocalists from different genres of music. This program will include listening samples, photos, a playlist, and possibly some video clips during the session. Patrons might want to bring a pen and paper!  Central Library 2100 Park Place, Birmingham, AL 35203 Tired of Giving In: Rosa Parks and the Montgomery Bus Boycott Monday, March 7—Friday, April 1 Join us for the opening reception on Friday, March 11, from 6:00—7:00 p.m. in the Central Library's Grand Reading Room! The event will feature a talk about the exhibit from Madeline Burkhardt, Adult Education Coordinator/Curator of the Rosa Parks Museum. The exhibit will be on display at the Central Library during operating hours from March 7—April 1, 2022. The Tired of Giving In: Rosa Parks and the Montgomery Bus Boycott exhibit was made possible by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.   Bards & Brews: "Strong Her" Open Mic Night Friday, March 11 | From 7:00—9:00 p.m. Ashley Jones, Alabama’s youngest and first black Poet Laureate, is hosting Bards & Brews: "Strong Her." This is an open mic in honor of Women’s History Month. Some of metro Birmingham’s most talented poets will share original poetry paying tribute to strong women. Bards & Brews is sponsored by the Alabama State Council on the Arts. Five Points West Regional Branch Library 4812 Ave W, Birmingham, AL 35208 Women's History Month Movie Matinee—How It Feels to Be Free Wednesday, March 23 | Starts at 10:00 a.m. Join Five Points West Library for a viewing of the documentary How It Feels to Be Free, featuring the true stories of Nina Simone, Diahann Carroll, and other amazing black entertainers.   Inglenook Branch Library Women's Health Issues with Bridgett Rene Friday, March 18 | Starts at 6:30 p.m. Continuing the discussion from North Birmingham Library (Friday, March 11), join Inglenook Library for a discussion on women's health issues with Bridgett Rene, a yoga specialist instructor. There will be free massages with limited availability!  Registration is required. Call 205-226-4025 to register. North Birmingham Regional Branch Library 2501 31st Ave N, Birmingham, AL 35207 Let's Collage! Monday, March 7 |  Uploads at 12:00 p.m. Drawing is hard, but collaging is easy! Celebrate Women's History Month by making portraits of women with magazine clippings. This program is virtual and will be posted on the North Birmingham Library's Facebook page. Women's Health Issues with Dr. Richardson Friday, March 11 | Starts at 6:30 p.m. J oin North Birmingham Library for a discussion with Dr. Nadia Richardson, the Founder and Executive Director of No More Martyrs. There is a chance to win a $250 prize and more! Registration is required. Call 205-226-4025 to register.  Women Artists Throughout the Ages  Wednesday, March 16 | Uploads at 12:00 p.m. Learn about women artists throughout history, then play a matching game and try to successfully match the artist with their art. This is a virtual program that will be posted on the North Birmingham Library's Facebook page.   1 8th Ave W, Birmingham, AL 35204 "I Am Woman" Film Series Every Wednesday, starting March 9 | Starts at 3:30 p.m. Smithfield Library is starting a film series next Wednesday, March 9, featuring stories of real-life revolutionary women. Check this blog again on Monday, March 7, to see what films they are showing.  Woodlawn Branch Library 5709 1st Ave N, Birmingham, AL 35212 Women's History Month Crossword Puzzle All month long | During business hours Mon, Wed, and Fri 9:00 a.m.—6:00 p.m.  Celebrate Women's History Month with a fun Women's History crossword puzzle! The puzzle will be available throughout the month of March.   Woodlawn Library also put together a creative book display for Women's History Month with books by and about women who made their mark on history.  Stop by to see what books they recommend!
