📰 News we're reading

1. Dallas County tornado victims encouraged to apply for state home recovery funds (blackbeltnewsnetwork.com) — Homeowners in Selma and Dallas County with lingering damage from the January 2023 EF-2 tornado can now apply for grant help through the Home Recovery Alabama Program, not a loan. A local recovery office is open at 124 Broad Street in Selma, and applications are first-come, first-served, with funds aimed at covering repair costs that insurance didn’t fully pay.

2. Tax Collector: Property tax deadline coming Dec. 31 (blackbeltnewsnetwork.com) — Dallas County property owners in Selma have until Wednesday, Dec. 31 to pay their ad valorem taxes without penalty, either at the courthouse, online, or by mail to the Selma P.O. Box. After that, accounts become delinquent, extra fees kick in, and unpaid properties could end up in an online tax lien auction scheduled for May 12, 2026.

3. Dallas Co. deputies bust suspected bootlegger (waka.com) — Dallas County deputies have arrested a Selma man after a raid on a home about eight miles east of the city uncovered several gallons of suspected moonshine, equipment used to flavor it, and marijuana. Investigators say they’re still looking for the still’s location and believe alcohol was being sold from the property, with the possibility of additional arrests as the case develops.

4. Rep. Sewell Applauds Committee Passage of AGOA Reauthorization (house.gov) — A three-year extension of the African Growth and Opportunity Act is moving forward in Congress, and Rep. Terri Sewell says it could mean more jobs and investment for cities like Selma. By expanding duty-free trade with African nations, she argues local businesses in Selma and the Black Belt can reach new global markets and grow exports.

5. Former Vice President Kamala Harris coming back to Alabama (al.com) — Selma residents may remember Kamala Harris from her visits to Bloody Sunday commemorations here in 2022 and 2024; she’s returning to Alabama for a public conversation in Montgomery on Feb. 12. The event at the Montgomery Performing Arts Centre is part of her ongoing book tour for “107 Days,” reflecting on her 2024 presidential campaign. Tickets go on sale Friday.
