Founded in the spring of 2017 by Dr. Jeff Dugas and John Cubelic, the distillery's website says the initial business concept was a small craft whiskey distillery.
This has since evolved to include a bar and tasting room serving the full line of Dread River products, a full-service kitchen, a merchandise store, and a 4,000-square-foot event space.

The distillery officially opened in August 2019 and six months later found further use for its capabilities amid the global demand for sanitizer during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Now on the other side of the pandemic, Dread River says it has picked up where it left off in its mission of producing award-winning whiskey.
"At Dread River, every bottle is a story, every glass is an opportunity; to listen, to confide, to connect," the distillery's website says.
