Following his death, investigators with the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit obtained a new warrant charging Bates with murder. She had remained jailed without bond on the original attempted murder charge and was immediately rebooked under the upgraded charge, also without bond.
Police said neither Tanker nor Bates was affiliated with the university.
Authorities have not released additional details about the nature of the argument that preceded the shooting.
